One week escape to Belize with a stay at Lamanai Outpost Lodge in Orange Walk District in the north of Belize, then move on to the town of San Ignacio in the Cayo District of Western Belize, staying at Cahal Pech Village Resort. The itinerary includes guided tour of Maya archaeological sites of Xunantunich and Cahal Pech. Dating as far back as 1000 years and abandoned in the 9th century, Cahal Pech includes over 30 structures atop a hill, constituting a citadel or acropolis. Xunantunich dates from roughly the same period though it survived the Maya collapse and continued to be settled until the 11th Century.
The itinerary ends with a city tour of Belize City. Among the sites typically visited are Baron Bliss Lighthouse, the resting place of Belize”s most well known benefactor; Memorial Park, former Belize City Prison, recently restored and declared a national museum, housing a permanent exhibit of Maya artifacts; the Maritime Museum; the Paslow Building, home to the municipal court and the post office; the Swing Bridge; the Supreme Court Building, built in 1926 and still functions as the highest court in Belize; St. John”s Cathedral, dating back to 1812 it is the oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America; House of Culture, once the residence of colonial governors, now a historical museum; the National Handicraft Center and more.
